The m4300 does have alot of integrated hardware so backing down to a more plain configuration makes alot of sense. Just as an FYI I did try both SATA settings with similar results. What seems strange to me is that at this point in the installation process the only thing it should be accessing is the DVD and memory. Be sure to update your optical and hardrive with the firmware updates before the installation of Win 7 if applicable from the Dell driver page for Vista. You will need the Intel chipset and matrix storage manager for Win 7. You have the PM965. For the other drivers, use the Vista version from Dell support.
