I have been in love with David Hamilton’s photography since June this year, and since it is December now I thought it was about time I dedicated a post to these visual treasures. The Muse, 1971 David Hamilton’s photos have a distinct dreamy, grainy quality and feature almost exclusively young women and girls: girls lounging around in stockings and half-buttoned shirts that wonderfully reveal their budding breasts, girls with messy hair getting lost in reveries, girls braiding their hair or coyly glancing in the distance, girls dressed like ballerinas, girls in the idyll of the countryside, girls reading Girls with sun kissed skin and freckles, possessing a natural, gentle, unassuming beauty – they are just like a dream. The young age of the girls and the erotic nature of the photos led to discussions about his art being art or pornography.

Well, I love the pictures for their aesthetic value and I think there’s no need to be prissy. Gazing at Hamilton’s photos is like escaping into a dreamy fantasy world and what I like the most is their intimate mood, it feels as if the girls are unaware of the photographer’s presence, as if Hamilton stepped into their secret inner world and captured it. I feel as if I am flipping through their diary, invading their secret thoughts. The photo that I am particularly entranced with at the moment it the one above called “The Muse”.

The girl is so beautiful and I can’t help but wonder about her life in 1971? What was her personality like, what music did she listen to, how did she dress? And lastly, my favourite. David Hamilton is best known for his soft focus, dreamy, grainy style of his images, David Hamilton set the fine arte photography aesthetics of his time. The soft focus and muted colours, the lines created by the human form and captured by Hamilton are beautiful and representative of his style. He has published numerous photography books, directed five feature films, and has been showcased in magazine articles and art exhibitions, including his notable exhibition at Images Gallery in 1977 in New York City. Hamilton’s softening has the following effects: In color photography it limits the saturation, creating in one gesture a limited palette. It also serves to give the feeling of the past tense as if these photographs are memories. His photos happen not now but years ago and the image survives not as a record but as a vague memory image imprinted in the mind of the model, somewhat like a Freudian Deckerinnerung where, grown up, she remembers a moment of her life, but does so in a self-deceptive manner, from the outside, seeing herself through someone else’s eyes.

Hamilton claimed he never used any filters to achive his characteristic look, shot everything by diffused (indoor) natural light (never using any reflectors or artifical fill) and used only Ektachrome 200 film. He used two different Paris photo labs for processing B&W and color. Some of the Ektachrome photos were pushed for a grainy look. His studio became a popular meeting place for models, artists and photographers. Often forty or more people would crowd into the forty square meters and line up outside the door if it was too packed. “It was when I was working for Printemps that I discovered St. Tropez, in its sublime setting with beaches where people sun-bathed in the nude. It was a world that was completely new to me, and nothing, during my youth in England, or the life I had led until then, had prepared me for it.” Hamilton’s work hang in the US Library of Congress, Carnegie Hall and the Royal Danish Palace among others. Hamilton’s first photobook was published in 1971.

Around 1892 and was purchased by h & d folsom in 1893 and asorbed by Stevens arms & tool in 1926.if anyone else knows anything about these guns i'd like to know as there seems to be little info or history available. I have an oxford arms 12 ga that was my grandfathers after many years of looking the only info i have come up with is that the guns were produced by the crescent for belknap hardware company in louisville KY around the early 1900's the only values ive seen were in the $300-$400 range and it seems as though the hammerless versions were worth more(with steel barrels rather than damascus)the crescent fire arms company was in norwich conn. Hundreds of thousands of similar guns were imported from Belgiumc.
